CUBA CARIBE FESTIVAL presents:

Haitian Traditional Drumming and its connection to Cuba

APRIL 14, 2016

Lecture/Demonstration:
Haitian Traditional Drumming and its connection to Cuba
by Daniel "Brav" Brevil

Haitian traditional drumming shares many organizing principles with other African-based forms of music. Daniel will choose examples from the repertoire that illustrate how melody can carry information: to organize a line that the lead drummer can develop, to call changes in the dance, to ask for a particular step, or as language that mimics speech or the lyrics of a Kreyol song. Melody can come from one drum, but can also be spread among as many as 4 players. Hearing how Daniel organizes the music will help you understand similarities between Cuban Haitian traditional drumming of music you may familiar with.

Museum of the African Diaspora; 685 Mission St, SF; 7pm.

Thank you all for participating in both TRINITY Drum, Dance, and Song Workshops! Our recent workshop was an amazing experience. Students learned the drum rhythms Kontradans & Nago. They also sang beautifully for Marasa and Papa Ogou. Everyone left spiritually refreshed. I am so thankful for the opportunity to teach my culture and to share the beauty of Vodou with you. TRINITY 2016 coming soon!

We All Break

"With two teachers of mine, Daniel Brevil and Markus Schwartz on traditional Haitian percussion: Rada and Petwo drums; myself on drumset and Haitian Boula drum; Matt Mitchell on piano and percussion. I wrote music for the piano using traditional Haitian rhythms and structures; we sing songs of Vodou as well. There are many many contributions from Daniel, Markus, and Matt which make a strong impression on the group's sound."

*Community Service Update* march 2nd 2011

from oakland to haiti...

In January 2011, RTL's Musical Director, Daniel "Brav" Brevil joined forces with Ayiti Resurrect and Ayiti Cherie Healing Project to assist earthquake victims in Leogane, Haiti. The Delegation included local artists, builders and healers to commemorate the anniversary of the quake, erect a monument to honor victims, implement a wellness clinic, and host expressive art workshops for youth, which included: theater, song and drum circles and mask making.

We salute Daniel for his tireless efforts to remain committed to his country and neighborhood of Carrefour Feuilles. A huge THANK YOU to our dedicated dance community for your incredibly generous clothing, medicinal and monetary donations. Your unwavering support is deeply appreciated!

the "brav" update ~THE RETURN! march 15th 2010

Drumming and teaching for over 25 years, Daniel "Brav" Brevil has solidly built a reputation as one of Haiti’s finest dance accompanists. He is also an accomplished Drum teacher, leading classes and workshops for youth and adults worldwide. He exemplifies a unique insight into the relationship between dance and drum, which informs his compositions, arrangements, performances, and teachings. Last year, Mr. Brevil relocated to the Bay Area, also serving as Musical Director for Rara Tou Limen Haitian Dance Company.  As the world has been rocked by the  historical Earthquake in Haiti, it was a recent visit home that his reality shifted as well, surviving the quake -after his family home was destroyed,  he tenaciously navigated relocation efforts for his family, while his indomitable spirit transcended into community leadership, bringing much needed medical attention and relief to his area of Carrefour Feuilles and Haiti...

Mr. Brevil safely returned to the United States reuniting with Family, Rara Tou Limen and Bay Area Community. With determination and fervor Mr. Brevil continues to raise awareness sharing real-life accounts of surviving the Quake and on-the ground community initiatives  through speaking engagements, panel discussions, and other shared works. Through ongoing efforts initiated by his Family in Haiti: Brevil Family & A.C.H. (Action pour la Croissance Humaine) - he maintains dedication to provide much needed assistance to his community of Carrefour Feuilles, a district of Port Au Prince, Haiti.

AYITI!"...a Community partnering initiative"
     Congo SQ West
, went into immediate launch, locally & nationally, plugged-in and partnered, keeping our radars open with the primary goal in tact- provide direct assistance to our families/organizations affected!

Alison Smith of New Orleans offered her efforts "to help us locate Daniel", while serving at Port-au-Prince's General Hospital. Initiative leader, R. Calloway tenaciously worked with "Rara's" leader P. Jefferson to guide and report information with a focused effort to facilitate the connection between Daniel & Alison - the wee hours of January 23, 2010 marked that landmark encounter.
With gratitude and inspiration Congo SQ West salutes Daniel Brevil and his family for their faith and courage!

#UpliftAyiti2010: Haitian Earthquake Relief & Revival. We reflect upon one of the most rewarding campaign relief initiatives in our 10 years reigniting the power of a guided mission in service - Faith forward. At Congo SQ West Kinship Society we harvest the natural resources of our Commune+Unity, empowering Arts leaders and organizations as philanthropic agencies and service agents.
Bearing a longstanding dynamic kinship trek with Bay Area Haitian performing Arts Company, Rara Tou Limen, lead by Founder/Artistic Director Portsha Jefferson and Haiti's Daniel BRAV Brevil - Haitian Drum Live, are shared testimony of lives saved, lives lost, a breath spared with direct relief impact against all barriers, blockades and despair.
Faith, Action and guided service is WHAT makes our works optimize the possible. Matondo to all of our #GSA's [Good Service Agents] and continued stewardship. #CSQwest10
